  1. What is Health Coaching?
Health coaching is an emerging field that integrates knowledge from nutritional science, exercise science, and cognitive-behavioral science. Health coaches can work in a variety of settings, including medical, corporate, and fitness facilities and work with special populations like those with type II diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure, among others. Those who hold a certification in health coaching also have backgrounds in a variety of professions. Given that health coaches are knowledgeable about nutrition, exercise physiology, and cognitive-behavioral change, they can provide comprehensive programming to help clients reach their healthy living goals. Health coaches can also work collaboratively with other health care professionals (e.g., medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, personal trainers, nutritionists, and licensed psychologists) to help clients formulate these achievable programs and enhance their long-term health.
  2. Certification through ACE
Founded in 1985, the American Council on Exercise (ACE) is a non-profit organization that strives to train and certify professionals for the fitness and allied health care industries. A main component of their mission is to abolish obesity and resultant diseases (e.g., heart disease, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, etc.) by 2035. Additionally, ACE is the only organization to provide its certifications through the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The NCCA provides accreditation for nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other health professions and is considered the "gold standard" in the US for determining professional competence.
